Security Tips

For your home

  • Trim shrubs and trees away from windows and entry doors.
  • Set up security lighting around the outside of your home, especially at side and rear doors and windows. Floodlights, which offer the brightest lighting, are the best deterrent to prowlers.
  • Install light timers for interior lamps when on vacation.
  • Secure all entry doors with 1" or larger deadbolts.
  • Install a wide-angle peephole on all entry doors.
  • For the best possible security against break-ins, a quality burglar alarm is a deterrent to all but the most determined burglars.
  • Have a lock for the garage door - do not rely on the automatic opener to provide security.
  • Always check to make sure the sliding door is locked at night and when leaving the house.
  • Advise a neighbor to remove newspapers and pick-up mail when you're on vacation.

For your Vehicle

  • Never leave valuables within plain sight in your car. If you have a trunk, then lock your valuables in there.
  • Park your vehicle in well-lit areas when possible.
  • When on vacation, be sure to keep maps, luggage and other items that indicate you are a "tourist" out of sight. Thieves tend to look for out-of-towners as they can be easier marks.
